The Project

This 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud arrived into the Carrosserie workshop in August 2022 for various fabrication jobs, including new wheel arches, rear quarters, along with sill and boot floor repairs.

Updates

Once the fabrication work was completed on this grand British classic, it was then treated to a full respray by our experienced paint team in our very own Dalby Spray Booths.

4th August 2022: It has begun to be stripped and rust is visible in various parts of the car. Both back quarters to be replaced and various bodywork to be carried out and resprayed.

1st September 2022: Work continues on the rear quarter repairs

19th January 2023: Two coats of primer applied, imperfections corrected from each coat. Stone chip to be applied under back wheel arches.

17th February 2023: Doors, bonnet, boot and remaining bodywork sprayed and ready to be reassembled.

23rd November 2023: Has been out for road testing and nearly ready to collect. One or two issues to fix including window seals. This has had numerous bodywork repairs for corrosion including back wheels arches. It has also had a full respray.

The Silver Cloud was a very rewarding restoration for our team at Barnard Castle to undertake and we thank the owner for their commitment to maintaining such high standards to this fine British classic.

History

With famous owners including Frank Sinatra and John Lennon having owned this iconic Rolls Royce model, it’s a great privilege to have a classic in the workshop that had such an impact on the luxury car market.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud first arrived in April 1955 as the much-awaited replacement for the Silver Dawn.

The design was much more modern than the pre-war designs customers had become familiar with and for which the firm had become known.

Featuring a pressed steel body on top of a straightforward box-section chassis, the doors, bonnet and boot lid were all formed of aluminium rather than steel to save weight.

Thus, the Silver Cloud was a transitional combination of the old and the new.

The 155bhp straight-six engine might not have been the last word in power but it was exceptionally smooth.

The Silver Cloud II arrived in 1959. Now boasting the soon-to-be-venerable Rolls-Royce V8 engine under the bonnet, its extra power made its presence felt with a 0-62 kmph time of just over 11 seconds.

The Silver Cloud III arrived in October 1962.

More than 100kgs lighter than the car it replaced, it featured some subtle stylistic tweaks – the most obvious being the introduction of twin headlights.

The Silver Cloud was succeeded by the Silver Shadow in March 1966.
