1st October 2026: Just arrived at the workshop and a priority list of works is being put together.
The Rover P5 Coupé was one of Britain’s most distinguished luxury cars, combining traditional craftsmanship, elegant styling and a level of comfort that made it a favourite among senior politicians, business executives and even members of the Royal Family. With its imposing presence, beautifully finished interior and effortless performance, the P5 Coupé represented Rover at its most prestigious.
The Rover P5 range was first introduced in 1958 as a large, luxurious saloon designed to sit at the top of the company’s model line-up. It was a substantial step up from Rover’s earlier models, offering greater refinement, more interior space and a more commanding appearance. The Coupé version arrived in 1962, bringing a sportier and more stylish alternative to the conventional saloon.
Despite its name, the P5 Coupé was actually a four-door car. Its distinctive appearance came from a lower roofline, slimmer pillars and a more elegant profile, giving it a sleek, almost pillarless look. The result was a car that managed to appear both formal and sporting, while retaining the comfort and practicality of a traditional luxury saloon.
Early versions of the P5 were powered by Rover’s dependable 3.0-litre straight-six engine, but the biggest change came in 1967 with the introduction of the P5B. This updated model featured a 3.5-litre aluminium V8 engine, originally developed by Buick in America and adapted by Rover for British production. The new engine transformed the car, providing smoother acceleration, greater flexibility and a more relaxed driving experience.
By 1970, the Rover P5B Coupé had become one of the most recognisable luxury cars on British roads. Its combination of understated elegance and V8 performance made it particularly appealing to those who wanted something more distinguished than an ordinary executive saloon. The automatic gearbox suited the car’s relaxed character perfectly, allowing it to glide along with very little effort.
Inside, the P5B Coupé was every bit as impressive as its exterior suggested. Leather upholstery, polished wood trim, thick carpets and generously proportioned seats created an atmosphere more like a traditional gentleman’s club than a family car. The dashboard was beautifully finished, with clear instruments and substantial controls, while the overall quality of the cabin reflected Rover’s reputation for careful attention to detail.
The P5B Coupé also had plenty of character on the road. Its V8 engine produced around 160 bhp, which was more than enough to give the big Rover respectable performance. It was capable of reaching approximately 110 mph, although most owners were far more interested in its smooth acceleration and quiet motorway cruising than pushing it to its limits.
The car’s styling was another reason for its lasting appeal. The broad chrome grille, distinctive front lamps, elegant roofline and polished Rostyle wheels gave it a commanding appearance without being overly showy. It was a design that aged remarkably well, looking just as appropriate outside a country house as it did parked in the streets of Westminster.
Perhaps the P5B’s greatest claim to fame was its association with the British government. Rover P5 models were used as official transport by several Prime Ministers, including Harold Wilson, Edward Heath and James Callaghan. Margaret Thatcher was also famously driven in a P5B when she became Prime Minister in 1979, several years after production had ended. The Queen herself was another Rover P5 enthusiast, adding to the model’s distinguished reputation.
Production of the Rover P5B finally came to an end in 1973, bringing fifteen years of P5 production to a close. By then, the car was beginning to show its age compared with newer luxury saloons, but its build quality, comfort and unmistakable presence meant it remained highly regarded. The Rover SD1, introduced in 1976, would eventually take over as the company’s flagship executive model.
Today, the 1970s Rover P5B Coupé is considered one of the finest classic Rovers ever produced. Its combination of V8 power, luxurious surroundings and beautifully understated styling has made it particularly desirable among collectors and enthusiasts. It captures an era when British luxury motoring was as much about character, craftsmanship and comfort as it was about performance, and remains a wonderful reminder of Rover’s proud motoring heritage.

I recently had corrosion repairs carried out to both front wings on my Porsche 944 and I am extremely pleased with the quality of the workmanship. The repairs involved cutting out the corroded sections and fabricating replacement metalwork rather than simply filling over the affected areas. The standard of fabrication and welding is excellent, with the repairs blending seamlessly into the original panels. The attention to detail is evident throughout the work, and the finished result looks completely in keeping with the car. As an owner of a classic Porsche, preserving originality is important to me, and the repairs have been completed in a way that maintains the character and integrity of the vehicle. The paint finish and panel presentation are superb, and once completed it is virtually impossible to tell where the repairs have been carried out. Overall, the craftsmanship is first-class and the car now looks significantly better than it did before the work was undertaken. If you are looking for high-quality metal fabrication and restoration work on a classic vehicle, I would have no hesitation in recommending them based on the quality of the finished product.Posted on Google

I found the team at Carrosserie to be friendly and helpful whilst maintaining an organised and professional approach towards the job in hand, they were also able to incorporate extra work I asked for at the eleventh hour. Carrosserie kept to the 'booked in' start date for the work to commence and throughought the work cycle i was presented with photos and videos as the work progressed. I'm very happy with the finished job, thank you and well done Carrosserie.Posted on Reviews.io

Took my Escort XR3i to Carosserie for re-commissioning. Brakes, suspension, springs, shocks, general overhaul - some gaskets, polish etc. All staff very welcoming, professional from office staff to engineers. Took me through the car's inspection - lots of photos of work to be done, progress and work finished. Kept in touch via e-mail throughout project. Not cheap but you get what you pay for with old motors! Good luck with move to new premises.Posted on Google

Neil who owns the company straight away gave me one of the best buying experiences I have ever had. He was nice to speak with giving me confidence in buying from him from the outset. This continued throughout the buying process with updates on the process of finance that he organised. Because of my working schedule being so hectic and having to juggle many parental duties. We were unable to get over to pick up the car in the week. Despite the company being closed on weekends, Neil went out of his way to meet me on a Saturday afternoon and even showed me around his amazing company. It was so clear to me that this is someone who is genuine, kind and cares about his company and customers in equal amounts. A truly rare thing in this day in age. I wouldn't hesitate to use his company myself in the future and would recommend him to friends and family in a heartbeat.Posted on Google
