The Project

This classic 1969 BMW came into our Bishop Auckland workshop in June 2025. Various engine works were carried out and new water pump fitted.

26th June 2025: Engine works carried out including rotor arm, distributor cap, HT lead, spark plugs, adjust engine timing, remove radiator. New water pump fitted, and radiator repaired by local specialist. Advisory works include the alternator not running true, tappets need adjusting, carburettor rebuild, fuel pump replace diaphragm.

The 1969 BMW 2002 is one of the most iconic models in BMW’s history and a key part of the brand’s resurgence in the postwar era. It played a pivotal role in defining BMW’s identity as a manufacturer of sporty, driver-focused vehicles. Here’s a detailed history and overview of the 1969 BMW 2002:

Background: BMW’s New Class

In the early 1960s, BMW was struggling financially and needed a new direction. The company introduced the “Neue Klasse” (New Class) sedans starting in 1962 with the BMW 1500. These cars featured modern engineering, sporty handling, and accessible prices. They were well-received and saved the company.

Birth of the 2002

The BMW 2002 was launched in 1968 as part of the 02 Series (introduced in 1966), which were smaller, two-door variants of the New Class sedans. The name “2002” comes from:

  • “20” = 2.0-liter engine
  • “02” = 2-door body style

The idea for the 2002 came when two BMW executives, Helmut Werner Bönsch and Alex von Falkenhausen, both had 2.0-litre engines installed in their 1602s. Realising the potential, BMW greenlit a production version—thus, the 2002 was born.

  • 1969 BMW 2002 Specifications
  • Engine: 2.0-liter M10 inline-4
  • Horsepower: 100 hp (standard 2002)
  • Transmission: 4-speed manual (automatic optional)
  • Top Speed: ~106 mph (170 km/h)
  • 0–60 mph: ~10.5 seconds
  • Weight: ~2,200 lbs (1,000 kg)

The 2002 combined lightweight design, rear-wheel drive, and independent suspension—making it a joy to drive and far more dynamic than most economy cars of the time.

Variants Over Time

Though the base 2002 was already a hit, several important variants appeared:

  • 2002 ti (1968): Twin-carbureted version with 120 hp
  • 2002 tii (1971): Fuel-injected, 130 hp – more performance and refinement
  • 2002 Turbo (1973): First European turbocharged production car, 170 hp – very rare and collectible

Note: In 1969, the ti and standard versions were available, but the tii and Turbo came later.

Impact and Legacy

  • Helped BMW gain a strong foothold in the U.S. market.
  • Became a cult classic for driving enthusiasts—often credited with creating the sport compact segment.
  • Laid the groundwork for the BMW 3 Series, launched in 1975.
  • Revered for its balance of practicality, performance, and style.

Collector Status

  • Today, the 1969 BMW 2002 is a highly desirable classic. Key points for collectors:
  • Early round taillights (used until 1973) are more sought after than later square ones.
  • Cars in original condition or with tasteful restorations command strong prices.
  • The 2002 tii and Turbo are especially valuable.

Friendly, helpful, extremely knowledgeable, patient enough to explain the processes and reasons for doing things and highlighted even more how approachable the team are. They tried to accommodate our needs and requests to get our beloved old riley back on the road as soon as possible despite the ups and downs that were thrown our way and into the teams path! We could not have wished to deal with a more personable company after encountering some other teams that really made a botch of stuff, seemed uncommitted and were not professional at all. Carrosserie as a team were totally the opposite . . would we recommend them ? ABSOLUTELY !!! We would not go anywhere else now, THANK YOU TO Steve, Neil, Graham and Nicola . . Oh and Karen who spilled the beans about the the birthday surprised to my partner (whose car it is ) . but made the experience all the more special when a bottle of wine was presented as well as a treat to Simon for his birthday AND made it all the more worth dealing with the team ! THANK YOU AGAIN !!!

My car was the subject of some body and paint repairs here in Spring 2024, to address corrosion plus some substandard paintwork. An annual service was also carried out. There was good responsive communications, advice, and attention to detail throughout, to ensure a high quality, durable result, with the final paintwork being indistinguishable from factory finish, and easily better than any franchised dealership repairs. If you are invested in your classic car, want to make it last, with an exemplary finish to be proud of, then you need look no further.

I can't recommend Carrosserie highly enough, the service was exemplary from start to finish and the workmanship is second to none. I highly recommend giving the team a call for any work you need doing to your classic car, no matter what it is, you will not be disappointed!
