This beautiful 1973 E9 3.0 CSL came to the Carrosserie workshop for a full restoration. There was a lot of rust and many of the aluminium panels were perforated.
The engine was removed and all affected panels as well to remove all of the rust. New panels including door skins were fitted and then the whole car resprayed using Noval Clearcoat. The polish as we say is already in the Spraygun!
There was also a misfire that was traced to a faulty pressure sensor. The 1973 3.0 CSL (or CSi) was fitted with Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection. Increasing power from 180HP with carburettors to 200BHP with injection. We had to source parts directly from Bosch in Germany who are still able to maintain these systems.
This gorgeous E9 is now ready to face the next 50 years! It’s owner will be taking the car back to London. A very fine automobile to navigate the capital in.
The CSL model came to the UK in June 1973, and 500 examples were imported upto mid 1974. The CSL was a homologation special to enable BMW to use these lightweight cars (based on the CSi road car) in competition, for example the European Touring Car Championship.
All coupes were built by Karmann, who were based in Osnabruck, the mechanical parts being shipped direct from Munich. Some 30 years after production ended, many parts are still available from BMW to keep these classic E9 series coupes on the road.
