The Project

This 1967 Mercedes 230sl Automatic came into our Bishop Auckland workshop in September 2025 to be reassembled after the restoration was started elsewhere.

12th September 2025: The car isn’t currently running, so engine checks are being carried out. A list of missing parts has been put together and are being sourced to finish the refit.

> More updates to follow.

The 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230SL, part of the W113 series, is a luxury roadster known for its elegant styling, advanced engineering, and nickname “Pagoda,” referring to the concave shape of its removable hardtop.

Introduced in 1963 as a replacement for both the 190SL and the high-performance 300SL, the 230SL was produced until early 1967, when it was succeeded by the 250SL.

In total, about 19,831 units of the 230SL were built, but only around 185 units were produced in 1967, making that year especially rare.

Mechanical & Performance Specs (Automatic version)

  • Engine: 2.3-litre inline-6 (M127), with Bosch mechanical fuel injection
  • Horsepower: Approximately 150 hp (DIN), or ~170 hp (SAE)
  • Torque: Around 159 lb-ft
  • Transmission: 4-speed automatic (fluid-coupled, no torque converter)
  • 0–60 mph: Approx. 13 seconds (automatic)
  • Top Speed: ~120–121 mph
  • Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive
  • Suspension: Double wishbone front; independent rear with swing axle and compensator spring
  • Brakes: Front disc, rear drum (power assisted)

Design & Features

  • Signature “Pagoda” concave roofline on the optional removable hardtop
  • Safety innovations included crumple zones and a rigid passenger cell
  • Interior options: leather trim, wood accents, Becker radio, optional power steering
  • Automatic transmission was more common in export models, especially in the U.S.

Collectability & Rarity

  • The 1967 230SL is rare due to limited production before the 250SL replaced it
  • Automatic models are slightly less desirable to collectors than manual versions but are still highly valued if original
  • Value depends on condition, originality (matching numbers), and provenance
  • Restoration quality and documented history significantly affect the car’s market value
