The Project

This 1955 MG TF 1500 came into our Bishop Auckland workshop in December 2025. The car has come in for a recommission to allow the owner to get it back out on the road.

16th December 2025: Engine works are currently being carried out to determine a priority list of repairs.

The MG TF 1500 was a British two-seat sports car built by MG (Morris Garages) at Abingdon, England in the early 1950s. It was part of the long line of MG T-type “Midget” cars that began in the 1930s.

The TF model itself was first introduced in October 1953 as a modernised version of the earlier MG TD. It kept the basic body and chassis of the TD but added several updates: headlights faired into the front wings, a more slanted radiator grille, individual bucket seats, and a refreshed dashboard with new instruments.

Initially the TF used the same 1,250 cc engine as the TD, but demand for more power led MG to develop a larger engine. In mid-1954, the engine’s bore and compression were increased, raising the displacement to about 1.5 litres (1,466 cc) and boosting power. Cars with this larger engine were designated the TF 1500. They also had a small enamel “TF 1500” badge on the bonnet sides to distinguish them.

The TF 1500 was produced in 1954 and into early 1955. Around 9,602 TF cars were built in total, of which about 3,400 were TF 1500s. Most were exported, especially to the United States, and only a small number were officially sold in the UK.

In April 1955, production of the TF ended, and later that year MG introduced a completely new sports car, the MGA, which replaced the traditional T-series design with a more modern body and was produced from 1955 to 1962.

The TF 1500 is now valued by classic-car enthusiasts as the last of the traditional MG roadsters, representing the end of an era of lightweight, simple British sports cars before the arrival of more contemporary designs.
