This 1977 MG Midget in a vibrant blue came into our workshop in August 2026 for mechanical works including a new ignition barrel.
1st September 2026: The car requires a new ignition barrel. Further investigation had also identified that it required a new fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump.

The MG Midget was one of Britain’s best-known small sports cars, offering simple mechanicals, lively handling and affordable open-top motoring. By 1977 the Midget had been in production for more than fifteen years and had evolved considerably from the original model introduced in 1961.
The 1977 MG Midget belonged to the final major generation of the model, commonly known as the 1500. Introduced for the 1975 model year, this version incorporated significant mechanical and styling changes, many of which were made to satisfy increasingly stringent safety and emissions regulations in important export markets, particularly the United States.
One of the most obvious changes was the adoption of large black polyurethane bumpers at the front and rear. These replaced the traditional chrome bumpers of earlier Midgets and gave the later cars a distinctive appearance. The suspension ride height was also increased to meet American bumper regulations, resulting in a slightly different stance from earlier models.
Under the bonnet was a 1,493cc four-cylinder engine derived from the unit used in the Triumph Spitfire. This replaced the 1,275cc A-Series engine fitted to previous Midgets. In British specification, the larger engine produced approximately 65 bhp and provided noticeably stronger torque, making the car more flexible in everyday driving.
The engine was paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Although the Midget was never intended to be exceptionally powerful, its compact dimensions and relatively low weight gave it enjoyable performance. More importantly, its responsive steering and traditional rear-wheel-drive layout provided the engaging handling for which MG’s small sports cars had become renowned.
The Midget’s construction remained straightforward, with a unitary steel body, independent front suspension and a live rear axle located by semi-elliptic leaf springs. Front disc brakes and rear drums provided stopping power. The uncomplicated engineering helped make the car relatively inexpensive to maintain and contributed to its popularity with enthusiastic owners.
Inside, the Midget was deliberately compact and functional. It was strictly a two-seater, with a simple dashboard, clear instrumentation and relatively little unnecessary equipment. By 1977 the interior had become more comfortable and better equipped than that of the earliest cars, but the emphasis remained firmly on providing an uncomplicated sports-car experience.
The Midget shared much of its engineering and body structure with the Austin-Healey Sprite. The Sprite disappeared from production in 1971, leaving the MG to continue the basic design throughout the remainder of the decade.
Despite its increasingly traditional engineering, the Midget remained popular during the late 1970s. Its modest dimensions, accessible performance and open-top character made it an attractive alternative to larger and more expensive sports cars.
Production finally ended in 1979, bringing almost two decades of MG Midget production to a close. More than 220,000 examples had been produced across the various generations, establishing the Midget as one of MG’s most successful sports cars.
Today, the 1977 MG Midget represents the later development of the classic British lightweight roadster. Its 1500cc engine, distinctive black bumpers and simple rear-wheel-drive engineering give it a character of its own, while its compact size and straightforward mechanical construction continue to make it an accessible and enjoyable classic sports car.
