The Project

This 1990 Porsche 944 S2 arrived at our workshop in April 2026 for repairs to both front wing ends and then paintwork to finish.

6th May 2026: Both front wing ends have been stripped back and will now require fabrication repair work due to corrosion that has been found. Once complete it will move into prep and paint.

> More updates to follow.

The Porsche 944 S2 was introduced in 1989 as the final and most developed version of the Porsche 944 line before the arrival of the Porsche 968. It combined the wider bodywork of the 944 Turbo with a naturally aspirated engine and became one of the best-balanced sports cars of its era.

The 944 series itself began in 1982 as an evolution of the earlier Porsche 924. While the 924 had originally been developed with Volkswagen involvement, the 944 was far more distinctly Porsche in design and engineering. It featured wider arches, improved performance and a more sophisticated chassis.

The 944 S2 used a 3.0-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder engine producing around 211 bhp. At the time, it was the largest production four-cylinder engine fitted to a passenger car. Power was delivered through a five-speed manual gearbox mounted at the rear in a transaxle layout, helping the car achieve near-perfect weight distribution.

In 1990, the 944 S2 was available as both a coupé and a cabriolet. The coupé was especially respected for its precise steering, predictable handling and excellent balance between comfort and performance. Performance figures included 0–60 mph in around 6.5 seconds and a top speed of approximately 150 mph.

The S2 stood apart from the turbocharged 944 Turbo by offering smooth, linear power delivery rather than outright turbo performance. Many drivers appreciated the naturally aspirated character and everyday usability of the S2, making it a highly regarded grand touring sports car.

Inside, the 944 S2 featured a practical and well-built cabin with supportive sports seats, clear instrumentation and a hatchback rear design that gave the car surprising luggage space. Porsche also improved refinement and equipment levels compared with earlier 944 models.

By the early 1990s, the 944 range was nearing the end of its production life. In 1992, Porsche replaced it with the Porsche 968, which heavily evolved the same platform and mechanical layout.

Today, the Porsche 944 S2 is recognised as one of the finest transaxle Porsches ever produced. Enthusiasts value it for its reliability, balanced handling and strong naturally aspirated engine, and good examples have become increasingly collectable.
