I’m sure there’s not much I can tell you about 1992 F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell that you don’t already know.

His crashes (always big), the heartbreak of a blow out and a DNF instead of the world championship.  The lift he gave to arch rival Senna with one foot in the cockpit – I’m sure the H&S police would block that now!

Oh and that wheel to wheel racing with Senna at Barcelona with sparks flying.

A proper British hero.

Well now he is auctioning off all of his spare ‘stuff’.  This isn’t like an 80s band doing one final tour for their pension.  In his own words:

“The best thing I can do is let fans around the world look after my collection for the future.”

As he says in an Observer article this weekend:

“I got to 28 years of age and just stayed there,” he says. “You try to stay young – you don’t let the old man in. I’m ready for the phone to go to step back into one of the cars if someone needs a reserve driver. I’ve even been slimming in case ! I’m ready to go, I tell you.”

It is hard to tell if he is joking.

“I’ve broken my neck, I’ve broken my back three times, my feet are all smashed, I’m going in for an operation to get some splintered bone out of my right foot, and I’m stronger and fitter than ever.”

All of the proceeds (after the staggering 24% buyers premium PLUS VAT!) are going to the charity Youth Work UK, where Mansell has been president for 27 years.

So I think it’s worth having a look at the 242 lots that are here.

The auction is tomorrow (Tuesday 10th), but you can register and bid straightaway.

Good luck!  And do let me know if you get anything.
