This is great news for the classic car industry. First Line (an aftermarket parts supplier) has seen growing demand for parts for modern classics like:
– Toyota MR2
– Mazda MX-5
– BMW E30
– VW Golf – older models.
A true sign of real demand from enthusiasts for these cars.
First Line started in 1983 and now boast over 50,000 parts. They cover:
– Suspension and steering parts
– Filters
– They own Borg & Beck – well known supplier of clutches and brake parts
– Electrical parts.
All the parts that regularly wear out every few years.
This is all great news as it reduces the reliance on cheap ‘plastic’ parts from China sold on the likes of eBay.
Borg & Beck still do their own engineering and often supplied the original parts back in the 60s to the factories when these cars were state of the art.
They have recently launched a range of clutches for the original Mini and now boast over 250 different ranges.
Global Marketing Director, Jon Roughley, said: “We’re proud of our Borg & Beck brand and its extensive heritage, which we are continuing to build. We still have the original technical drawings for the Borg & Beck clutches and use them to ensure the modern version is specified to perform and feel just like the original.”
In many cases they now offer the same basic design but updated with modern bearings and modern friction material. Guaranteed to fit the car perfectly and also to last a lot longer than the part they are replacing.
Now I’m sure some of the purists out there will be alarmed by that thought, but if I’m driving a 70’s car then I would rather have modern brake friction material under my foot than a 50 year old chocolate brake pad!
So good news all round. The only reason these companies are making parts is because there is a demand for them.
And the fact that there is a demand is down to you!
So keep up the good work.
