I thought I would delve back into our archives today for a respray of a German classic with a slight twist.

This 1969 Porsche 912 Targa came to us for a respray.

A 912?  Yes a 911 – but fitted with a 1.6l 4 cylinder Flat 4 engine derived from that in a 356 (or Beetle if you’re feeling uncharitable).

Here are some 912 fun facts:

– Last year of production (original run)
1969 was the final year Porsche produced the original 912 before replacing it with the 914.  Do look up the 914 – a glitch in the matrix for recognisable Porsche design.

– Entry-level Porsche (but very capable)
The 912 sat below the 911, using a simpler engine, making it more affordable while still delivering ‘classic’ Porsche handling.  Think annoying/ terminal understeer quickly flipping to full-road width oversteer with barely any warning.  And in the wet . . .?

– Engine: flat-four, not flat-six
It used a 1.6L air-cooled flat-four engine (derived from the 356), producing around 90 hp.

– Lighter than the 911
Because of the smaller engine, the 912 was lighter and had ‘better’ weight balance, often making it more ‘forgiving’ and agile than early 911s.

– Strong fuel economy (for the era)
It could achieve roughly 25 mpg, which was impressive for a sports car in the late 1960s.

– Distinct driving feel
Less power, but very “pure” – momentum-based driving, rewarding smooth inputs rather than brute force.  Do all you can to keep it in line!

– Body style
Available as a coupé and Targa (the removable roof panel introduced by Porsche).

– Production numbers
Around 32,000 units were produced between 1965–1969, with 1969 models being among the last and now quite collectible.

– Revival later on
The 912 name returned briefly as the 912E in 1976, but the original short-wheelbase/early long-wheelbase cars like 1969 are the most sought after.

This car was imported from Texas.  A great idea for rust free metal.  South Africa is also a possibility with RHD as a bonus.

And so what is it worth?  I don’t know how much the Texas import/ LHD has on values, but Hagerty has a Targa 912 worth between £24k and £83k.
